Boxer Vijender loses in semis, settles for Bronze

Beijing, Fri, 22 Aug 2008 NI Wire

Boxer Vijender Kumar on Friday ended his rally at Beijing Olympics with bronze medal after losing to Cuban Emilio Correa Bayeaux in the semi-final clash of 75kg middle weight.

Despite the advantage of height, the 22-year-old Bhiwani boxer out-punched by his opponent and lost by 5-8. The Cuban took up a clever strategy by fighting from a long distance.

However, despite the loss, Vijender Kumar became the only Indian boxer to record an Olympic medal in Olympic history.

Kumar couldn’t not manage to gain any point in the first round though he made a recovery in the second to taper Cuban lead to 3-4.

However, Bayeaux implying an aggressive strategy gained three points in the third round to take the score in his favour to 7-3, while Vijender failed to draw any point in that round.

Kumar though tried to catch an aggressive strategy in the decider but the Cuban survived the attack, although earning a two-point penalty for committing a foul, leaving the scoreline 8-5.
