Oct 30: One more Arab country Egypt has made its entry to the list of nations who are contemplating civil nuclear power plants by announcing its plans to build several nuclear power plants.
Surprising announcements of going for civil nuclear energy were made by the President Hosni Mubarak in his speech on national television. President justified the ambition by citing the need for diversification of energy sources to conserve the natural resources of energy for coming generation.
More surprising feature has been that US has welcomed the proposal, which amounts to quite contrary reaction that US gave to Iran.
State department spokesperson McCormack has said that US would not raise points of objection to the programme as long as Egypt follows NPT and IAEA guidelines. This is to be known that Egypt is a signatory of nuclear non-proliferation treaty.
“For those states who want to pursue peaceful nuclear energy that is not a problem for us”, said the spokesperson.
Citing energy security as a part of country’s national security system, president Hosni Mubarak said that Egypt has no intention to make bomb and so very much willing to work with UN nuclear watchdog agency.
He also said that very soon higher council for the peaceful use of nuclear energy would be established and the whole program will be done in co-operation with the international partners.
He also clarified that Egypt is also not willing to import uranium.
