Opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been ruled out from the entire ongoing one-day series against Sri Lanka owing to an ankle injury. The team management on Monday announced his unavailability on Monday.
"Sehwag's injury is bad and he will miss the remainder of the series," Indian team manager Sanjay Desai said on Monday. However, there was no replacement announced till Tuesday. However, it is being said that all-rounder Yusuf Pathan will fly for SriLanka to replace him.
Sehwag was left out from the first ODI of the five-match series after reporting an injury during the practice session on Sunday. He was replaced by former Under-19 captain Virat Kohli.
India is already out of star batsman Sachin Tendulkar who withdrew from One-day series after sustaining an elbow injury during the last Test match in Colombo. Sehwag’s exit no doubt will put additional pressure on the opening pair.
India’s poor batting in the first ODI has already cost the match in which the entire team just unfolded making a skimpy 146 in 46 overs. The Lankan in response comfortably achieved the target in 34.5 over and won the match by 8 wickets.
“He was the batsman in top form. It (injury) was quite bad” Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said yesterday in a press conference after the first match.
"That's the way it goes in cricket. You can't really stop and think about the guys you will be missing in the series. Rather than that you will have to fill in that space. Because that is the only way your team can win," he further added.
Sehwag was the top scorer with 344 runs, including an unbeaten 201 in the Galley Test, in the recently concluded three-match Test series against Lanka. India eventually lost the series 2-1. Considering his match-winning performance in the past, his absence is certainly a blow to the Team India.
