Oct 22 : “Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.”
This holds true for the son of immigrants from India, Bobby Jindal, who carved his name in the world history by being elected Governor of Louisiana on Saturday. The Republican Congressman from New Orleans managed to receive a thumping 53 percent vote, above the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff in November.
He will be the first Indian American Governor when he takes the office in January.
At his victory celebration he told “My mom and dad came to this country in pursuit of the American dream. And guess what happened. They found the American dream to be alive and well right here in Louisiana”.
He will be the youngest to serve the post of Governor. With a bitter past of Katrina hurricane devastating the state of Louisiana and also one of the poorest with law literacy level, he will have a lot to prove his nerve.
His win has delighted many Indian Americans with his depth of knowledge in politics. But political experts say now he will have to move with caution as he has daunting task before him. Louisiana’s poor fiscal structure is a major issue.
During the campaign Jindal was criticised for not talking his stand on hurricane hit New Orleans, but he said after the being elected that he hoped to secure federal assistance and he intend to meet President Bush to discuss the regions needs.
He also said that his first act will be to call a special session to reform ethics laws.
Kathleen Blanco defeated Jindal in 2003 election and was criticised for her handling of the situation upshot of hurricane Katrina.
Four years ago he contested for the gubernatorial post for the first time which he lost but since then he became a well known figure in American politics.
After 2003 election he announced his candidacy for the post of Governor of Louisiana in 2007 election. He defeated eleven of his opponents in the election. Kathleen Blanco did not seek another term.
Bobby Jindal an Oxford educated is a Hindu born but converted to Catholicism. He is only the second Indian after Dalip Singh Saund to serve in Congress.
He is 100 percent against abortion and support abortion ban, and has vowed to clean corruption.
He will take his oath as governor on January 18, 2008 with promise to give new heights to the administration of Louisiana.
