Oct 20: The state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), India’s largest telecommunication company is in its mode of service expansion by offering new value added services and also introducing new technologies. The latest one in its frame is the Wi-Max to connect the remote region all across the nation.
The company after launching mobile TV for its GSM users a couple of weeks back in some of the selected regions of north and north-east India is now planning to tie all parts of rural areas by high speed wireless broadband internet service. This 2000 crore project is certainly a promising initiative by the company to improve rural telecommunication infrastructure.
Earlier BSNL launched DataOne broadband service in January 2005 with the help of ADSL2 technology on copper cable network but as far as Wi-Max technology is concerned, it is much more reliable with high speed wireless data. This can further broaden its reach by delivering better broadband with fixed and mobile services.
According to Kuldeep Goyal, the chairman and managing director, “BSNL is a pioneer in providing affordable high-quality communications services to Indian customers and this mega broadband expansion initiative is another step in that direction.”
“The BSNL rural broadband project will bridge digital divide and connect 20,000 villages in India by delivering high speed broadband services,” added Goyal.
Apart from being one of the best technologies in terms of speed of data transfer this would also make the use of broadband service cheaper. With increase use of mobileTV devices, small PCs, low cost PCs and the demand of video conferencing, video content on mobile phones, the use of Wi-Max undoubtedly a next level change on the way of mobile information and interaction.
Meanwhile, BSNL has asked Nokia Siemens Networks to build broadband access infrastructure across 7000 villages. With this Nokia Siemens will set up its Gigabit Ethernet-capable IP DSLAMs Surpass hiX5625 (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers) and chassis-based access switch (Surpass hiD6615). In addition the company would also provide end-user devices to enable BSNL to provide speeds of up to 24Mbps for ADSL2+ subscribers via its Copper infrastructure.
Partnering with Nokia Siemens Networks and using Wi-Max would give BSNL an edge over other broadband services as it would be the first to cover rural areas on such a wide scale.

October 22, 2007 at 12:00 AMOnce again BSNL showed that it is the only company which having the intention to serve the remotest corner of the country with the state of the art technology like Wimax. We the people residing in the remote north east part of the country eagerly waiting for high speed & cheaper data service as in other cities. But at the same time BSNL has to improve its service quality.

October 20, 2007 at 12:00 AMBSNL's broadband service is like a vegetarian cafe menu: small idlis, little vadas, little bondas, with puli chutni, thenga chatni, kadalai chatni and so on and different mixes like the mini meal, full meal etc. It is just a platter for display, a vexacious variety, offering broadband speed and charging meanly for downloads, and allowing free downloads only when the night is dying down. It is not a sincerely service minded organization. The genuine users who want to view streaming videos, news clippings etc, and want to spend a while on the web get nothing but a hefty bill for the small megabytes they browse about.
It is worthy to note that BSNL has started mobile TV for its GSM subsribers . But in which city ? We being in the north east part of the country is not aware of. Again wimax is welcome. BSNL must go for aggressive marketing strategy to override others. The media has recently reported the state owned company can be appreciated for maintaining all stringent rules and check up of identitity criterion for issuing SIM due to security purpose. Some GSM providers are not maintaining market ethics & following license guide lines it seems. BSNL shud finally sustain in the market as a state owned company for a transperancy in competition else subsrcibers may be cheated again if only private monopoly continues.
