There have been various mythological stories behind this name of the goddess. One story goes like there was one rishi named Katya who worshipped hard to please the goddess Durga and requested the goddess to be born to him in the form of his daughter. Goddess Durga accepted his request and was born in his family. This is why she was called ‘Katyayani’.
When earth was very much disturbed by the atrocities of the demon ‘Mahishasur’, the three gods of the heaven thought to create such power which could destroy the demon.
As a result ‘Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh’ contributed certain part of their influence and grace and created a ‘Devi’ who killed the demon ‘Mahishasur’ who disturbed the whole earth by his atrocities and relieved the people of earth. She was first worshipped by the ‘Katyayan rishi so was called ‘Katyayani’.
