Oct 16: China showed its anger to United States over Dalai Lama trip to U.S. China has also warned that giving honour to Dalai Lama could sour its relationship with U.S.
On Wednesday, Dalai Lama will receive a Congressional Gold Medal, a top US civilian award. With Bush to attend the ceremony, China has made clear its intention and urged Bush to keep himself away from the scheduled meeting.
"Bush should not carry out any activities that will hinder relations between our people and countries," said Raidi, the Vice Chairman of the standing committee of the National People's Congress. "We hope that Bush will stop interfering in China's internal affairs."
"We have already made many representations to the American side and we would like to again prompt the American side to correct the mistakes and to cancel the arrangements," foreign ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said.
"We express strong dissatisfaction and our firm opposition. This action will seriously undermine China-US relations," Liu said.
"Unfortunately, a person like the Dalai Lama, who seeks to split up his country and doesn't even recognize his own country, is received and respected by governments in certain countries," said Tibet Communist Party Chief Zhang Qingli.
Bush will host the ceremony in White House, to this self exiled spiritual leader after a leading a massive protest against Chinese rule in 1959.After the failed protest Dalai Lama fled to India and has made Dharamsala, a northern hill town in Himachal Pradesh.
Dalai Lama, who won Noble peace Prize in 1989, has led a non –violent protest against Chinese regime.
China alleged that Dalai Lama want to establish an independent Tibet, which is denied by the spiritual leader saying he wants greater autonomy.
Beijing also protested German Chancellor Angela Merkel's historic meeting with the spiritual leader in Berlin last month. China reacted strongly and severed of an annual meeting in Munich to discuss Human right issues.
The spiritual leader also met Austrian Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer last month and Australian Prime Minister John Howard in June. He will meet Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper this month.
Some political scientist believes that this will send a clear message to Chinese Government to carry dialogue with Dalai Lama, as Bush has insisted Chinese Government to enter into a dialogue on the longstanding issues with the Spiritual leader.
Congressional Gold Medal is the nation’s highest and most distinguished civilian award. This was first awarded in 1776 to George Washington. The medal is given in recognition of lifetime achievement and outstanding services.
Interesting and unique about this medal is that each medal is different to specifically commemorate the person and achievement for which the medal is awarded.
