Alarming rise in groundwater levels in Jodhpur

Jodhpur, Sat, 25 Jul 2009 ANI

Jodhpur, July 25 (ANI): Alarming rise in groundwater level in Jodhpur has become a cause of concern for the residents and the administration.

The groundwater level in the city has increased to such an extent that it has reached the foundations and undergrounds of the houses and shops. People are now pumping water out from the basements.

"We pump out water daily from the basement but again it gets filled with water. The foundation of our building has become weak. We fear that building might collapse," said Manohar Lal, a godown owner.

As part of the rescue measures, the administration has identified major water resources in the city to pump out water from them.

"For its temporary solution, the State Government has decided to provide around 12 crore rupees for the project.

The administration has identified sixty water resources in the city and will pump out water from them in order to decrease the water level," said Navin Mahajan, district collector.

The matter will also be discussed with researchers from Roorkee and Hyderabad and also Geological Survey of India (GSI) experts will be called to make a road map for the project that will be further implemented.

One of the reasons for rise in water table, as suggested by researchers could be that the residents in the city have reduced use of traditional water resources such as wells and ponds. (ANI)
