Chandauli (Uttar Pradesh), July 17 (ANI): One person was killed and five others were injured in a stampede during Army recruitment rally here on Sunday.
According to sources, stampede occurred due to the panic created by an air fire by the Military Police to control the mob.
Military Police were forced to fire in the air, to disperse a group of candidates who were protesting against the alleged foul play in the selection.
Protesters also blocked the Grand Trunk road, set fire to the local railway station.
According to the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Secretary, Shashank Shekhar Singh, the state government has ordered an official inquiry into the entire incident.
Singh said Chief Minister Mayawati has directed the Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Inspector General of Police to rush to the spot to take stock of the situation.
The State Government has also sent a letter to the Defence Ministry asking to co-ordinate with the district administration for the security arrangements for such rallies in the state in future, Singh said. (ANI)
