India's Olympic campaign for gold in shooting shattered on Saturday when both Anjali Bhagwat and Avneet Kaur Sidhu put a dismissal start and failed to qualify for the finals of the women’s 10m air-rifle event.
Ace shooter Anjali Bhagwat only secured 393 points in the preliminary rounds to end at 29th place while Avneet finished at 39th spot with 389 points out of 400.
Katerina Emmons of the Czech Republic sealed the first gold in the women’s 10-metre air rifle. She dotted a world record by spurting 400/400 in the qualifying and surpassed previous best of 502 set by China’s Du Li at Athens. Emmons, a bronze medallist from Athens 2004 scored 503.5 points.
In the same event, Russian Lioubov Galkina (502.1) won the silver while Croatia's Snjezana Pejacic finished third with 500.9 to bag the bronze medal.
Another Indian shooter Samresh Jung failed to qualify for the final round in the men's 10m air pistol event. Jung, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games multiple gold medalist, finished 42nd among 48 shooters in the qualifying event with a disappointing 570 points out of 600.
China's Pang Wei qualified first with 586 points, this was the second gold for China after Chen Xiexia won in the women's 48kg weightlifting.
