Oct 05: India who used to avoid carefully taking Aung San Suu Kyi’s name has urged the military junta of Myanmar to release the opposition leader, who is in house arrest for last 12 years.
In a special session of United Nations Human Rights Council on Myanmar in New York, Swashpawan Singh, India’s envoy to the council said "The government of India believes that the release of Aung San Suu Kyi would be helpful in terms of the process of democratisation and that she can contribute to the emergence of Myanmar as a democratic country.”
Singh in his statement described Myanmar as a "close and friendly neighbour" with whom India shares "links of geography, culture, history and religion."
He mentioned that the recent suppression of the protesters in Myanmar in which 13 people killed has become a concern for India.
Than Shwe has agreed to meet Aung san Suu Kyi but only with some preconditions, this was conveyed to UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambri during his visit to Myanmar.
The junta alleged that Aung San Suu Kyi is asking for confrontation and utter devastation of military regime which she will have to shrug of.
“If she declares to give them up, the senior general will personally meet with her,” said a government announcement published in The New Light of Myanmar.
Myanmar with a history of military coup is ruled by military junta since 1980’s, Than Shwe is heading the regime since 1992.
“Many Burmese suspect that having preconditions prior to the meeting is aimed to be used as an excuse for the failure of meeting,” said Khin Maung Win, an editor at the Oslo-based opposition radio station Democratic Voice of Burma.
Aung san Suu Kyi is the leader of National League of Democracy, which has been protesting to restore democracy in the country. NLD registered a massive victory in 1990 elections .But the military regime never allowed them to rule the country.
NLD has also supported economic sanction on Myanmar to act as a catalyst to open a political dialogue with the party.
While the military regime complaint the lopsided broadcast of some international media and attempt by some foreign nation to destabilise the nation.
UN has yet to take a decision on Myanmar based on the report of Ibrahim Gambri.
China has the reservation against any harsh decision on Myanmar. And having a veto power on the council, China’s decision will matter against any decision on Myanmar.
China is key on which the military junta has thrived so long in spite of all the harsh sanction on the country.
Aung San Su Kyi undying hope has kept her spirit alive for her fight against the brutal regime.
But Than Shwe seems to hum the same old tune against NLD.
In an another step to urge the government to stop the crackdown, Shari Villarosa, U.S Envoy in Rangoon will meet the General on Friday in the administrative capital Naypyidaw . Sean McCormack, US state department spokesperson said that she would send a very clear message to the General to start a meaningful dialogue with the democratic opposition groups.
