Kolkata, June 2 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Tuesday visited cyclone relief camps at Sarberia in North 24 Parganas district.
Assuring that the government will provide money to rebuild their houses, he said, "The government will provide the money to rebuild your houses."
Bhattacharjee, who talked to people who have taken shelter in the relief camp, demanded that they be provided permanent shelter so that they do not become refugees after every flood.
Thousands of people from different villages of Sandeskhali area in North 24 Parganas district have been rendered homeless due to the cyclone and accompanied floods.
Earlier, Bhattacharjee visited relief camps in Nimpith in South 24 Parganas, the area worst hit by 'Cyclone Alia'.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Government has asked the Centre to release thousand crore rupees from the National Calamity Fund and declare the cyclone devastation a national disaster.
The cyclone hit the coastal areas of West Bengal.
At least 5.1 million people were displaced, with more than a million people left stranded in the Sundarbans alone. Hundreds of thousands of houses were also destroyed.
At least 125 people are reported to have died. A total of 71.64 tonnes of relief material was airlifted to different camps and 25 passengers were transported to safe spot. (ANI)
