Raipur, May 31 (IANS) The Chhattisgarh Police Sunday gunned down a Maoist commander in a gun battle in the state's northern forested stretch.
Officials said a police search squad had killed Ramesh Barua alias Mukesh in a gun battle in a thickly forested area of Surguja district, 400 km from here.
Mukesh was an area commander of the banned Leftist outfit, the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), in the tribal district bordering Jharkhand state.
He was wanted by the police for his active role in at least 22 Maoist attacks.
The police said three associates of Mukesh managed to escape into the forest. A rifle was recovered from the killed rebel.
