New Delhi, May 25 (IANS) Binayak Sen's brother Monday said he was 'overwhelmed' by the Supreme Court's decision to grant the civil rights activist bail after more than two years in jail on an unproven charge of links with Maoists in Chhattisgarh.
'Finally justice has been done, he (Binyak Sen) has been in jail for two years without a shred of evidence against him,' his brother Dipankar Sen told IANS over phone.
Dipankar, an options trader in the commodities market in Antwerp, Belgium, is currently in India and has been fighting for his brother's freedom. He also thanked the people who had put up a continued fight for Binayak Sen, who is a doctor by profession.
'I am overwhelmed at the decision of the Supreme Court and we thank people of the country and especially journalists who have supported us in our fight,' he said.
Asked if Binayak Sen would continue to provide medical services in the tribal areas of Chhattisgarh, Dipankar said: 'This is a decision that dada (brother) has to take.'
Binayak Sen had helped establish a hospital in Chhattisgarh to serve poor mine workers in the region and founded a health and human rights organisation, which supports community health workers in 20 villages.
The 59-year-old, who is also a civil rights activist and national vice-president of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), was held at Bilaspur town May 14, 2007 under the stringent Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act. He was later shifted to Raipur Central Jail.
Binayak Sen and his family have always vehemently denied charges of having any links to Maoists.
